If you ask most people, or even Google, the question "Who Discovered America?" you will likely receive the answer "Christopher Columbus." As Americans, we were all taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America after Queen Isabella I & King Ferdinand of Spain sent him off to find a new route to India.

Fun fact, Columbus was actually Italian, but none of the Italian governments wanted to fund his excursion, so he had to market his mission all across Europe, hoping that someone would bankroll his quest to India.

Portugal said NOPE (They already had a good route to India)

England said NAH (They did not think he would succeed)

France said NOT A CHANCE (They had no faith in his plan)

Finally, after years being rejected by wealthy aristocrats & land owners, Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon said YES. They had just finished winning a centuries long war they waged to kick the African Moors out of Spain (the Racist Reconquista) and were looking for more ways to continue waging race wars for profit.​

Winning the Reconquista gave Ferdinand & Isabella extra money to invest in colonial projects, so they figured that Christopher Columbus' passion made him the perfect man to invest in.
